You’ve found the right loan, signed the agreement, the bags and boxes are packed and you’re all ready to move in to your new home. Fresh properties are always an exciting time – finding out the quirks of your building, meeting your new neighbours, inevitably scrabbling to find something that you’ve accidentally left back at the old place.
But as exciting as it is for you, it is absolutely nerve-wracking for your cat. Feline friends are wonderful to share your new dwelling with, but you might find that they are a little less enthusiastic than you are. So here are a few ways you can keep kitty happy.
Keep them in while they make a din
Cats are territorial, and by moving home you have removed them from their kingdom. Without the familiar sights and smells, for them it is like they have just stepped onto another planet. To help them settle in, keep them confined to the house or a single room. They may wander about making lots of noise, meowing at everything and nothing, but after some time it will pass.
Keep them collared
Nervous cats are liable to make a run for it, and they will seek the familiar: namely, your old place. Even if you have your cat microchipped, keep a quick-release collar on them too. The RSPCA tells us that there are 3.3 million or more cats in Australia – don’t let your furry friend get lost in the crowd.
Keep your cool
Don’t less the stress of your cat get to you either. They will calm down and learn to love the new place as much as you do, you just have to be patient.
